National Parks & Travel Photography

Travel PhotographyA summer road trip can provide exciting and challenging opportunities for picture-taking.  Wildlife find homes in scenic national parks throughout the continental United States where they are protected from hunters.  Landscape vistas in most national parks are spectacularly beautiful.  In addition, common state roads and highways offer everyday beauty we sometimes ignore and take for granted.

Glacier National Park, for example, is an area unique in the US.  This area was formed by glaciers and remains in its primitive condition for the most part.  Going-To-The-Sun Road is the only one crossing the Park.  Bears, wolves, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, deer, elk and moose call this Park home and are protected from bounty hunters.  A variety of plant and animal life exist in this unusual biome, thus creating a unique environment not equaled anywhere else in the country.

Spectacular wild flowers invite photographers to snap their beauty in late June and July, after the winter snows melt.  Trail heads leading from short roads allow the visitor to traverse on foot to find the fields of flowers throughout the park.  Some perimeter roads also provide this opportunity.  Autumn brings blazing colors that mark the beauty of nature’s changing seasons.  And photographers love blazing color.

Brave early risers will enjoy shots of wildlife grazing.  Traveling across the park and taking some of the offshoot roads leads you to grazing areas.  Sometimes Mother Nature really cooperates and you can get pictures of wildlife grazing in a field of wildflowers.

Bryce Canyon, also formed by glaciers and the Grand Staircase in Escalante, New Mexico are equally majestic national parks.  Arizona and Utah offer Monument Valley and its grand rock formations that were formed by wind and water erosion.  Yellowstone National Park is a national treasure and every US citizen feels some ownership in Old Faithful.

Finally, national park visitors wanting some great pictures to mark a memorable summer need to remember to travel light.  The window of opportunity may be only a few seconds for that once in a lifetime shot; thus a lot of equipment will only be in the way.  Small digital cameras and highly portable larger cameras insure being able to take advantage of the serendipities nature springs upon us.
