Recently we spent a day shooting for Saxon Motorcycle Company in Casa Grande, AZ. Saxon was hosting a test ride for several motorcyle magazines, and hired us to shoot the guys from the magazines as they were riding Saxon's newest bikes. We took off in our SUV in front of the guys, and headed out to long stretches of highway heading South. When we were sufficiently far out of town, we opened up the tailgate on the SUV and Char rode in the back, bracing herself against the bumper so that she didn't fall out... Tony drove at a constant speed, around 60 mph, and the riders took turns riding just a few inches off the back bumper so that we could get great 'action' shots of them. We shot at a fairly slow shutter speed (1/2 of a second or so), considering the fact that we were at highway speeds, which allowed us to capture some great motion blur in the background and the wheels of the bikes. Since the riders stayed a consistent distance from the bumper (rider and car traveling at the same speed), they stayed in focus because in relation to the camera, they were technically 'not moving'. We choose to shoot in shutter priority mode, since we were most concerned about allowing motion blur and didn't have time to adjust the exposure on each frame. We ended up with some great action shots, which are going to be used in each of the magazines for their articles on the new Saxon bikes.
Tony also apparently made a personal impression on one of the writers - we came across this article this morning while surfing the web...
